Christmas Decorating

Growing up my parents gave us Hallmark Ornaments in our Christmas stockings every year.
I had a bunch of ornaments that needed a new home this year, so we got a live Christmas Tree!!
Our Christmas star. It has lights that plug into the tree lights. Thank you Grandma!

We made some ornaments for our tree too. I think these ones have to be my favorite. We made some home made modpodge and cut up some sheet music and glued it around the ornament ball.

Rudolph is pretty cool too. I shredded brown construction paper to put inside of him.

For this one, I used some of those rhinestone things that you fill flower vases with,
and glued them all around it. It's super heavy, but looks pretty cool on the tree.
Modpodge on the inside and then glitter.
Attempt at painting on the ornament. I had planned to paint on more of them,
but after attempting an "H", I decided I'll stick with simple this year.
Our first Gingerbread house together. Next year maybe we'll try to make gingerbread,
but for now we'll stay with the pre-made kit.

I found this guy on Pinterest.
Everytime I would look at it, I just laughed.
So when Curtis was at school studying until midnight, I decided to make him.
I still chuckle every time I look at our fridge.
I think he's staying up until May.

And this is my last craft of the season. It's hanging above our mantle.

Merry Christmas!!!
May we remember the real meaning of Christmas and the gift our Savior gave to us all.

Catch up

Well it's been a crazy month and a half and a lot has happened since my last post. Curtis came in town for his break in between semesters for 10 days at the end of March. I still had to work during that time, but we still were able to spend a few hours together everyday. We also got our engagement pictures done and watched a few BYU basketball games. It was SO nice to get to spend more than a weekend with him. During the time he was here, I had a new niece born too. Chris and Kristine had their third child. Ashley is so sweet and the other nieces and nephews LOVE Curtis too, so it's always fun to get to spend time with them while he's visiting.

Curtis playing a song on the guitar for me...
he was just playing but I assumed it was just for me
haha
Ashley Hess... so precious!

A few weeks later... my dad, mom, and Andrea came into town. They had spring break, so they came to visit the grandkids and the new babies. Here's a picture of Andrea with Jayden and Austin.

They also blessed Ashley on April 17th. Here are some pictures with my mom and dad and grandkids.

The day after my dad and Andrea left, I flew to Ohio for my spring break! I knew that Curtis had a ton to do that week while I was there, so I was prepped for a relaxing week. It went by too fast and I was totally not ready to come back to reality. I was a HUGE slacker on taking pictures this trip though. I got out there late Tuesday night. On Wednesday, Curtis had class and lab all day, so I spent a few hours in the library working on stuff and then spent a few hours at the Dental Clinic getting some X rays on my teeth. Wednesday night, we made chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes and Curtis studied. Then Thursday morning, I slept in, while Curtis studied some more. (Get the picture yet? Curtis gets to study a lot! He studied probably more in 3 days than I did the whole time I was at BYU!) Thursday evening we went and registered at Target. We had been talking about doing this for a month or so now and we needed to get it done. Then Friday, Curtis had class and lab all day again, but this time I stayed at his place while he was gone. I worked on some school applications, read some of my book, relaxed, and made cookies!!!! I had been dying to make these sugar cookies. My sister in law, Kristine, gave me this really AMAZING recipe. I had an urge to be creative so I knew I wanted to make Easter egg shaped cookies and decorate them. Well... I couldn't find an egg shaped cookie cutter anywhere! I honestly made Curtis take me to 3 or 4 stores to find one! He thought I was being absolutely crazy I think, but I really had my heart set on making eggs, so he was very supportive and sweet. Finally we found a plastic egg that seemed like it would work, so I decided that I could use that. If anybody finds any egg shaped cookie cutters let me know. I may need one next year. haha Below is the result of my cookies. These were probably the best tasting sugar cookies I've ever made. That's not saying a lot though... I need some practice. Usually my cookies turn out hard and tasteless... The trick I learned from Kristine's mom, is to NOT let them cook more than 8 minutes even if they don't look done! Who knew! Not me... haha

Friday night we went to go see African Cats with Curtis's roommate Jimmy and his friend Jason. It was Disney's Earth Day movie. The plot wasn't my favorite, but the details of the animals and the scenery was beautiful! It was really neat. It totally made me add African on my list of places we need to visit. After that we went to Coldstone and got ice cream! Yum!
Curtis studying again.
Saturday morning Curtis and I went to the Columbus temple and did baptisms! So beautiful! I love the temple! Then after that we went back to his place and he studied... This is not a joke. Dental students really study that much! We did go to a dinner with his ward that night though and that was fun. After dinner... Curtis studied some more! I had a really, really good book I was sucked into, so I didn't mind too much. At least I got to sit next to him while he studied. :) Sunday, we went to church and had Easter dinner with friends, and then we watched Tangled! I had already seen it 3 times with my niece and nephew, but Curtis hadn't seen it yet! We finished it just in time to take me to the airport. This was probably my least favorite time of saying goodbye. Only one more airport goodbye and then Curtis flies out here to help me drive to Ohio!!!! Wohoo!!!!! Soooo excited to be with my best friend more!

Our Story.

As I've been reflecting over the past few months of how much my life has changed in the past year, it has hit me over and over and over again, how much our Heavenly Father is aware of us each individually in our lives and situations. He is mindful of even the tiny little details and knows of our struggles, trials, joys, desires, and our dreams. I don't believe in coincidences. I know that Heavenly Father does absolutely everything for a reason. Even the hardest times in my life, I can look and see the hand of God over different situations and blessing me through the smallest of miracles. He has control over absolutely everything and He knows exactly what He is doing. It is hard to understand sometimes, especially when we're in the middle of a difficult trial. We feel we have no idea what we're doing, where we're going, or even if there is a God listening. But I can promise, that God listens, He answers prayers, and He guides us, even when we don't recognize He is there.

Here is our story.

Well, let's go back to a stake activity in September of 2008. I was in charge of a group game at an Opening Social of about 300 Young Adults and Curtis just so happened to be in my group (coincidence... I think not!) We played a game called S.P.U.D. I didn't think much about my group at all and continued on with the activity, just trying to get through... I wasn't a huge fan of these social gatherings. It was awkward and I always felt silly. It's one of those things where you're surrounded by people, yet you still feel totally and completely alone. So I'm sure I was having an absolutely great time (I hope you can read the sarcasm). Well at the end of the activity we're cleaning up and Curtis comes over and gets my number before I leave. I'm sure he probably talked to me while we were playing the game, but to be honest, I just remember trying to get through the activity without looking like I was miserable.

He called me a day or two later and we went to a BYU choir concert with another couple and then got ice cream. A little bit after that date, he called and asked me out again. This time we went to a play at the Hale Center Theater. It was called "The Hasty Heart." Before the play, we went to a burger joint to get dinner. I apparently gave him my tomato. (I didn't remember this, but he wrote that in his journal...which I found out years later). He called me a week or so later and asked me to go to his sister's play ...yes... I met the family on the third date! We drove up to the play with his brother and sister and ate dinner at their house beforehand. As we're driving, they're all singing in the car and blaring the music. At this time in my life, this was totally and completely out of my box. (Yes, I would do this with my sisters...but anyone else that knows me, would say that it still is out of my box). Either way... this resulted in me thinking...I am not the type of girl he wants and I will never fit in with him or his family. I also was a bit intimidated by this all. So, when Curtis called again... I didn't answer and didn't call him back! Horrible, huh? I rarely ever did that, but I wasn't quite sure what to do with the situation. I wasn't at a place in my life that I wanted a relationship, so I tried to avoid it. When April came around (6 months later), I ran into Curtis after a devotional at the Marriott Center. I remember thinking, "Ooo...this is going to be completely awkward because I didn't call him back!" It turned out fine. He was going to Dental school in the fall and I was moving to DC to do my student teaching. Phew... things were on good terms.

I moved to DC to do my student teaching and grew sooo much in those 4 months. It honestly was one of those rough times where I struggled the most and spent more time on my knees in prayer than I had ever done in my entire life, but it was totally worth it. Little did I know, Curtis was going through some similar trials and difficulties in his life at this time also. I moved home in December of 2009 after graduating, and had absolutely NO idea what I was doing with my life. I wanted to move back to DC, but needed to wait a few months for a teaching license to go through and to save a little bit of money. In January, I decided that I needed to drive the hour to the Cornell branch in Ithaca for church. It was one of the best decisions I could have made while I was at home. I developed some great friendships and it was an incredible experience (Had I not been going to the Cornell branch, I would not have run into Curtis again). I then found a job working at a Daycare, and decided that it would have to do for a few months until I figured out where I was moving. Well that few months turned into 8 months, as my plans disintegrated one after another. In May I went with a few girls from the branch to a Conference in Kirtland, Ohio. The first night of the conference I said to one of the girls, "I knew a guy at BYU that is now at Ohio State. I wonder if he'll be here." (That was Curtis I was talking about, but he wasn't there). I still had his number and contemplated texting him...but decided that I wouldn't.

Two months later, I was with my Cornell group at the Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra, NY. (For anyone that doesn't know what that is, it is an outdoor theater production of The Book of Mormon. For more info see:http://www.hillcumorah.org/Pageant/index.php) It was just about to start and I noticed Curtis two rows in front of me. I wasn't quite sure it was him, but I was pretty sure. I still had his number, so I texted him. I watched him the whole time, but he never moved to get his phone out of his pocket or anything. Right after the show, he turned around! He saw me right as it was beginning, but didn't have time to say hi. I was super excited to see him. We caught up a little bit and then I invited him to a dance that the Palmyra YSA group was having that night. Normally, I wouldn't have said anything about the dance, but it just popped out of my mouth without me even thinking. My text hadn't gone through before, so he got my number again and then said he'd let me know if they were going to the dance. I found out later that he talked a few of his friends into going with him so he could see me again, and I'm so glad he came. I remember thinking..."It feels like it's just me and him here on the dance floor with nobody else around". I was in awe with him that night. From the start of the evening, I could feel a different spark and chemistry between us that had not been there two years earlier. We parted our ways that night, and I went to bed with a huge smile on my face. I hadn't heard from him the next day, so I texted him around the time that they should have been getting home. We texted a few times back and forth and then he called me. We talked for a little over an hour that first night and I think we both realized how much we really had in common.

Over the next couple of weeks, we texted and talked on the phone a TON. Curtis tried to get me to skype...but I thought that was really awkward. (It took me until the end of October to even consider it.) I was incredibly impressed with him though the more I got to know him. I loved the way he would think about me, even when we weren't together. He also is an INCREDIBLE communicator, which was something at the top of my list, and that stuck out from the beginning. Many friends have told me that I would not be able to find a guy that communicates...but... he definitely does. He's by far a better communicator than I am. By the end of July, Curtis made a comment that he had three day weekends in the summer and that if I wanted, he could come out to visit that next weekend. I was super excited, but I knew either the weekend would be amazing or it would be horrible. Well it ended up being AMAZING. It was sooo fun to get to spend 3 days straight with him. Talk about a long date! The whole weekend I would ask, "Curtis, what are we doing?" or "Curtis, you're really complicating my life, ya know?" He would just reply back, "We're just having a great weekend together." or "Mindy, I could simplify your life too!" with a huge grin on his face.

Well about a week later, I decided that I wanted to go to my friend Scotty's wedding reception in California. I also had the feeling that I needed to move somewhere, so I quit my job and flew to Utah. I drove to California with Pam and spent a few days there. It was a great road trip and I solidified a couple of things in my mind that trip. I knew by the end of that trip, that even though I had only spent a few days with Curtis, there was definite potential there. Curtis was also coming out to Utah in September to visit his family for his break in between semesters, so I decided that instead of making any plans on moving somewhere, I would stay and see how things went with him. I lived at Chris and Kristine's house for a few weeks and then spent a few weeks with Curtis. Two hours after I got to Curtis's house the first day, I received a phone call asking if I wanted to take a 4th grade teaching position that I had interviewed for. I was totally and completely torn. For the previous 8 months, I had searched and searched for a teaching job. I took the weekend to decide what I wanted to do. Curtis and I both knew it was probably too early to make a decision for me to move to Columbus, although that was what we both wanted. I knew the decision I wanted to make, but the morning I had to call the school to tell them my decision, I felt really strong that I needed to take the teaching job instead of turning it down. Turns out that that job didn't end up going through anyways, but I had made the decision that if I got a teaching job I would take it. Well a few days later, another school called and I had another interview. The principal ended up calling me back the next day offering the job, and although it was only a half-time position, we both felt like it was what I was supposed to do. We knew that it would be difficult to do the long distance thing, but decided that Heavenly Father would help us make it work if it was what He wanted.

Since then, we've seen each other at least for a long weekend every month, but it still isn't enough! I got a whole 3 weeks with him during Christmas and when we said goodbye at the airport, I felt like I was leaving half of my heart there. I'll move out there in June and then we're getting married in August. I know... it seems absolutely crazy that we'll only live near each other for 2 months before getting married...but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind, that he is the man I'm supposed to marry! It is insane how everything has worked together, it can only be an act of God. Although it is hard to be apart, I have gained some much needed experience in teaching out here that I would not have had if I was in Ohio. I have been able to work with specific kids that have stretched my patience and at times made me cry. It has been one of the most frustrating, yet rewarding jobs I have ever had in my life. I pray and care about these kids more than I ever thought I would teaching. It has been an experience that I am grateful for, even at the tough and rough times.

Even though the distance thing can be difficult at times, it makes the time that we do have together, that much better! I have never been so in LOVE and I feel absolutely complete when I am with him! I know that Heavenly Father blessed us with the opportunity to meet up again for a reason. We both had experiences in the past two years that have prepared us to be ready for each other. We needed some time to grow up and learn to have faith that God knew what he was doing all along. He had a plan. Even though we will all have times that we struggle to understand why something is happening in our lives, Heavenly Father always knows what is the best for us and will guide us in a way that will eventually lead back to Him. I'm so incredibly grateful for that knowledge and for the peace and comfort that it brought me over the years and will continue to bring. I am also grateful for Curtis and for his love and commitment. We're sooo excited to be getting married August 20th and can't wait to spend our Eternal lives together!

Once upon a time...

I went to Ohio to visit Curtis. I flew in about midnight last Friday. Curtis picked me up from the airport and we headed back to Columbus. We had to stop at his place before he took me over to Brandi's for the night. While we were there, he gave me a dozen roses. Very sweet start to the weekend. They smelled soooo good!

Saturday Curtis picked me up to go get my fingerprints done for my teaching license stuff and then we made breakfast at his place. The sun was shining and it looked beautiful outside, so we drove to a small park that had a trail around a little lake. We walked for a few minutes there and decided that although the sun was out... it was still freezing! After our walk, we ran a few errands and got groceries for our Sunday dinner. Then Curtis dropped me off at Brandi's while he went to a church meeting. It was really nice to spend some time with Brandi since I don't normally get a chance to hang out with her alone. We ran a few errands too, and then stopped for smoothies at Cosi...which has become one of my favorites so far in Columbus. After Curtis was done his meeting, we went out to dinner and then to a friend's party for a little bit. Since the party was so close to the Columbus Temple, Curtis showed that to me after the party.

Sunday After church we went back to Curtis's to get our dinner ready. We put together our roast for the crock pot, played a little bit of piano, and just spent a few hours together. We also drove to an empty parking lot to do a driving lesson... Curtis has a manual transmission and I can't drive stick, so we decided to try and attack that problem.... problem still not solved. I need A LOT of practice! After that, we played games at the assisted living center and sang for them with some of Curtis's friends. Curtis and I sang, "All I ask of You" from Phantom, and then Curtis sang a couple of other songs too. It was really fun!

Sunday Afternoon

Then it was time for dinner! Curtis had talked all of his roommates into finding other places to be that evening... that sneaky boy of mine... so we had the place to ourselves! Curtis got the fire started in the fireplace, while I made the salad and put the rolls in the oven. A few minutes later he pulled out a TON of candles, a table runner, napkins, and fancy glasses. He had planned this candlelight dinner! I was SUPER excited about this! Very cute! So we ate our romantic dinner and then cuddled up in front of the fireplace.
Here's a picture of the table, but I didn't get a picture of all of the candles across the mantle of the fireplace and ALL around the room. Literally, we had enough light to eat by total candlelight. It was really cute! LOVED it!

After a while, Curtis pulled out his guitar. This is something totally normal, so I didn't think much about it. He played a few love songs on his guitar, and then he went over to the piano. When we moved the couch earlier, he wanted to leave some room between the couch and the piano, but I said, "Why do we need room between the couch and piano? It's not like we're going to be playing the piano tonight." Well he decided after playing some guitar he wanted to play me a song on the piano (little did I know this was his plan all along, and I was being difficult.) So he played a song and then asked me to come over and play a song for him he wanted to sing through. I just wanted to sit on the couch and cuddle with him in front of the fire and enjoy our romantic evening, and here he wanted me to go play through some song we already sang through earlier in the day. I did go and play it for him, but I definitely put up a little struggle of whining and complaining. When we got to a particular spot in the song one of the keys on the piano stuck and wouldn't play. We had noticed this earlier on Saturday, but Curtis said he'd check on it later and see what was wrong. Well he decided he wanted to check on it at this particular moment. He had to move all the books and the lamp from the piano, and I thought it would be more convenient to do at another time. I really resisted him trying to be "Mr. Fix-it" at this point. I literally was trying to hold his arms from being able to open the piano. Haha. Finally, I just gave in. He opened the piano and there was a ring box! He asked me if I wanted to open it, but I told him I thought he should do it. So he opened it up, and then he got down on one knee. Very cute! We celebrated for a little bit and then decided to call parents and grandparents before it got too late that night! So exciting! Luckiest girl alive!

Here's a picture of us hiding in the roses and then a picture of my ring. Pictures don't do it justice. It sparkles WAY more than shows in a picture. Curtis did an amazing job picking out the ring. I LOVE it!

Monday: Valentine's Day
Curtis went to a few classes Monday morning while I studied in the library... well I was supposed to study. Then we went to his place and made lunch and studied for a few hours before we had to leave for my flight. We decided since we didn't really get any good pictures the night before we would take some more, so there's a few below. On the way to the airport that afternoon, we stopped to get gas. Curtis insisted on buying me a sandwich for my plane ride, so when he asked me what I wanted, I told him to surprise me... He came back with a Chicken Salad sandwich and a peanut butter Snickers bar... He couldn't get any more perfect for me!

            LOVE this one...

and this one...

and they will live happily ever after...

Ohio in January

I had a three day weekend for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so I booked a plane ticket to Ohio to see my boy.  I got in late Friday night and headed to Brandi's for the night. Saturday morning, Curtis came to pick me up early. We made breakfast and then studied and did some work for a few hours. We helped Brandi fill up her car tire and then we ordered pizza for our Saturday night date. Since I was visiting the weekend in between both of our birthdays, we celebrated and opened presents together. Then we moved the movie projector upstairs and watched Indian Jones on the big movie screen. Eventually, Curtis took me back to Brandi's for the night. Sunday, we went to church, came home, had some lunch, and took a nap. Then Sunday evening we decided to build a fire in his fireplace.

Here's a picture of Curtis blowing on the fire and then his amazing fire once he got it going.

We celebrated our birthdays with Ice Cream in front of the fire. :) Life doesn't get much better than that. hahaha

Actually... it did get better... My flight was supposed to leave at 6:30 the next morning... well somehow we didn't calculate correctly. Turns out... I missed my flight and couldn't get out until 7 that night. So... I got a whole extra day to spend with Curtis! Although it was stressful for a little bit, it was nice to get a couple more hours together.

Best Christmas So Far

So, now that it's been at least 3 weeks since Christmas, I figure I better catch up quick! December was such an eventful and wonderful month! I love the feeling of the holidays and for the time I always get to spend with loved ones. Curtis came out to Utah the week before my Christmas break. He finished finals and wanted to see his family out here before he headed with me to NY for Christmas. We had a really great week. He came and visited me at school and my kids got to meet him...which may not have been the best decision on my part. Today, my students brought up the fact that "Miss Hess has a boyfriend...oooooo" and they talked about Curtis for a few minutes. They loved him of course, so all is well. He played hacky sac with some of them, flew airplanes across the classroom, and just gave attention to a couple who crave love and attention. One student even put a bow on him and brought him over to me saying, "Here Miss Hess. He's your Christmas gift this year." We all laughed pretty hard about that.

Here is a picture of us at The Nutcracker in Salt Lake. So fun! I was in The Nutcracker when I was little but it was really cool to see the actual performance by a real ballet company! Thanks Curtis!
We also met up with my siblings that are in Utah and Idaho at the Christmas lights on Temple Square.
Here is a picture of Curtis and Jayden. They're best buds.

So for some reason, I don't have any pictures of Tyler and Mckenzie or Nicole and Juston.... sorry guys! Not quite sure how that happened. It was a very enjoyable night but we definitely missed Andrea, mom, and dad, who were in NY.

After a few more days of hanging out in Utah, we flew to Ohio and had an 8 hour road trip to NY! We spent a few days at my home, a few days in NYC, and a day in Hershey, PA with my mom's side of the family. It was a very, very quiet Christmas at our house this year, even with adding Curtis. All of my married siblings were at their in-laws, so it was just Dad, Mom, Andrea, Curtis, and me. We had a really good time though and enjoyed being out of school for a few weeks. Here are some pictures. If you want to see more of NYC, you'll have to look at my sister Andrea's facebook account.

Airports are MUCH more fun when you have somebody to fly with you!

This is on the Staten Island Ferry. The Statue of Liberty is behind us somewhere in that bright glare of light.

Also, one of my best friends from BYU, Pam, and her mom, met us one evening in NYC for dinner and to go to the Broadway show, West Side Story. It was sooooo fun to see her and to get to spend time with her. LOVE this girl! She makes me laugh and always keeps me on my toes. Especially when I find pickles in my purse...hm.... wonder where that came from?

Happy Birthday Curtis!

Today is Curtis's birthday, so of course he gets a dedicatory post! He has come into my life and swept me right off of my feet. Even though there are a million things I love about him, here are just a few of my favorite characteristics of his:

1. Curtis can relate anything to a song....and he always has one playing in his head! I LOVE this. I think it's so fun when he randomly bursts out singing, and it always makes me laugh.

2. The week after Curtis came to visit me at my home in NY, I received a card in the mail from him. As I opened it, I thought, "hm... I wonder what this is about." It was a Thank you card. I don't know that I have ever been more impressed with a guy than at that moment. He is so incredibly thoughtful, not just with thank you cards, but in all areas of his life. He constantly is thinking of others.

3. Curtis is a big kid at heart. The children just flock to him, and they LOVE playing with him. Around Christmas time, we went to Temple Square to see the Christmas lights with my siblings. Jennilyn, my niece,  wouldn't give a hug to anyone but Curtis and he was the only one that could get her to smile.

4. Curtis makes me laugh every single day. No matter what is going on in my life, he knows how to make me smile.

5. My ALL-TIME favorite thing about Curtis though, is that he has become my best friend. He is supportive with everything I feel I should be doing, he encourages me to be better, he is an outstanding communicator, and he believes in me when I don't believe in myself. I don't think any other person could be as patient with me as he is, or could treat me like a princess like he does. He has an amazing testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and he lives his life trying to be like him.

I am so incredibly grateful that Curtis was placed into my life at this time. He has been the greatest blessing ever. Thanks Curtis for all that you do for me. Hope you have a wonderful Birthday!!!

Thanksgiving

Since I had the whole week off of Thanksgiving from school, I got to go home!!!!! This year, everyone except Tyler and Mckenzie made it home. Curtis was able to come too! All of the extended family from Philly came up for Thanksgiving, so we had about 35 people at our house for dinner... including family and friends from the area too. It was so fun to see everyone and to get to spend time with the family.

Here's a picture of Josiah and Jayden. They were best friends all week! We heard comments from one another like, "I love you Jayden" and "I love you Josiah."

Jayden was able to go to the store with Grandma and Aunt Mindy. He LOVED the attention and even got a little spoiled.

Here's a picture of Jennilyn just being cute.

The boys snuggling

We had Andrea take some pictures of Curtis and I. I look a little drugged up because at this point I probably was... I had a nasty cold all week

Here are some semi-serious pictures of us.

And some not so serious pictures...

I think we need to work on our serious faces...

Good thing Christmas is just around the corner!!!!
